Chapter 13 Fox Trot Progresses

2100 Zulu, Tuesday, May 29, 1984, Agency Headquarters The Green Fox team gathers to hear reports from Jackson and David on their assignments from the previous morning. Jackson opens the meeting by telling David to report first. “Sarah Jacobs was very cooperative. She was worried she might be in trouble with us. When I assured her she was not in trouble but she could be of great help on an important issue she said she would do whatever we asked. I told her about our idea for a fishing story with her Israeli contact and she said she could do it. I asked if she had a phone number for her contact. She said yes but she hasn’t used it because calls to Israel are more than she can afford so she writes letters. I said it’s ok for her to call using her State Department phone so she agreed. It was near the end of the work day in Israel so we waited a bit until she felt Levi would be home and then called. Sarah gave the fishing story convincingly. I listened to his response and he seeme...

Already it led to her lying to Leon, which made her uncomfortable. Klaus having secrets he wasn’t willing to share kept giving her doubts. Meetings kept the Director tied up all day so he didn't relay the name of the contact to Jackson until after 5:00 pm. Jackson caught David before he left for the day and asked him to meet with the contact on Friday morning. David called Friday morning but the contact was out sick so he wasn’t able to meet until Monday when she returned to work. After returning from the Monday meeting with the State Department contact David gathered Jackson and the Fox Trot team in the SCIF to report his findings. “Let me quickly summarize, the State Department contact designated for us is the source of the State Department story. Her name is Sarah Jacobs. She is a young staffer in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs. She got her information from a young man in Israel she met and dated briefly while w...

She arrives about 7:30 and walks to the Mercure Hotel. She enters the breakfast room and as soon as Klaus sees her she turns and leaves as though she has changed her mind. She pauses in the lobby searching in her purse so she won’t draw unwanted attention until Klaus appears and takes the elevator up. She watches as it stops at the third floor. She follows and, seeing no one in the hall other than Klaus, joins him as he walks to his room. Then we’ll estimate the time it is likely to take to analyze the data, develop a report and review the report with Agency management. The second step is to carry out the analysis and the last step is to prepare the report, review it and close out this task team’s work with whatever documentation is required.” “The Director is going to need more than that David. I expect he will have to give the NSC a definitive schedule of when we expect to complete a preliminary assessment and when we will have a final report. I under...

Chapter 7 The Political Flap

1600 Zulu, Wednesday, May 16, 1984, Agency Headquarters As the Green Fox team gathers in the SCIF conference room for another of Jackson Spruell’s flaps Jackson waits impatiently, not with his usual quiet and reserved demeanor. As they wait Jason whispers to David. “How come you didn’t tell me about Mary Sue Lee?” “Actually I was supposed to. Nancy thinks she is a good match for you and asked me to introduce you but I hadn’t gotten around to it.” “Great David, but no matter. I met her at the hearing and we took the Metro to Roslyn together. She’s a stone fox, as you would say, and I love her southern accent. I’ve asked her to go jogging and for coffee afterward this weekend.” “Hope it leads to something for your sake. You have been single a long time. I tell you I have never been as happy as I have since I married Nancy. Oh, I think Jackson is ready to start the meeting.” Jackson rises from his chair and speaks in his usual unemotional manner, no longer seeming imp...

Chapter 6 Suspicion

1700 Zulu, Monday, May 14 , 1984, US Capitol Building Agency Director William Allen, a ten-year veteran having served three Presidents, patiently answers the tough questions of Senator Morris, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. The Senator from Vermont dressed as always in a pinstriped Brooks Brother’s suit with a bow tie asks questions about the Agency's analysis of the Poland situation. The hearing ends after nearly three hours of questions that add little to the Top Secret Report Allen had submitted at the committee's request. Allen typically brings one or two junior members of the Agency to SIC hearings. He doesn't need their support, rather he wants them to gain firsthand experience of how hearing are conducted and he wants the committee members to get to know up and coming Agency people. He hopes this helps the committee see the Agency has trustworthy people and not mavericks to be held in check. He also knows Senator Morris wants his own s...
